Seasonal influenza is a respiratory illness that is spread from person to person and is caused by human influenza viruses. You need annual flu protection because the influenza virus changes from year to year. The flu vaccine you received last year wasn’t designed to fight the virus strains in circulation this flu season. Yearly flu vaccination begins in September or as soon as vaccine is available and continues throughout the influenza season, into December, January and beyond. In general anyone who wants to reduce the chances of getting seasonal flu can get vaccinated. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone over the age of 50 and all children through 19 years of age should get vaccinated. Home Health United conducts a community-wide influenza vaccination campaign. Beginning in September, HHU nurses administer influenza vaccinations at many public sites including Northwest Dane Senior Services. HHU will host a walk-in clinic at the 4th Annual Health Fair on October 8th. If you have Medicare coverage, please bring all of your Medicare cards and a picture identification card. A complete list of Flu Immunization Clinics will be available at the center. More information is available by calling 608-767-3757 X 223.
