Black Earth Area Schools

Small, intimate classes, with a wide array of offerings.

The Wisconsin Heights School District is small yet competitive, rural yet worldly, active yet safe. This school district of approximately 900 students offers a full array of classes in a small school setting. It serves students pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Though rural, the district is located just 20 minutes west of Madison, Wisconsin’s state capitol and home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a fantastic educational resource.

“Heights” encompasses approximately 100 square miles.

The school facilities consist of two elementary buildings and a combined middle school/high school situated in the countryside between these two villages on Highway 14. Black Earth Elementary School serves students in grades Pre-Kindergarten-2, while Mazomanie Elementary school serves students in grades 3-5.

Many of those staffers live in the district because they value what the area has to offer. As a result, they know the children not only as students and neighbors, but also through community organizations, youth sports, and other local events. Whether teacher or secretary, cook or custodian, aide or assistant, these hometown connections help Wisconsin Heights educators meet the needs of Wisconsin Heights students.

A trademark of the Heights schools is the personal attention that comes through small class sizes. A typical class size is 15-22, whether in kindergarten, sixth grade science, or junior year American Literature. Even smaller classes are offered to help ensure student success in special areas such as advanced placement classes and upper level foreign languages. As a result of caring educators, committed students, and small class sizes, the district has a record of high levels of academic achievement as demonstrated by superior standardized test scores.

The community also recognizes that a fundamental part of a student’s life is what happens outside the classroom. Toward that end, the district offers a wide variety of extra-curricular programs for children of all ages.
